What Determines How I Rank on Google?

Glen Hall • November 10, 2024

Let’s talk about Google’s algorithm. It’s almost all-seeing, all-knowing—well, maybe not quite that intense, but it’s certainly great at matching searches with the best answers. For a small business, ranking high in those search results can make a huge difference. Good SEO, or search engine optimization, is what gets your business in front of those searching for what you offer. And while it sounds complex, it’s simpler than you might think when you break it down

So, what can a small business actually do to get found on Google?

1. Improve Your Google Business Profile

This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a direct request from Google! A polished Google Business Profile (GBP) makes it easy for potential customers to find and trust your business. Not sure what a GBP is? Don’t worry. We’re here to help—drop us a line at support@osiminteractive.com, or, you know, Google it! Here’s Google’s guide on improving your GBP for the DIY-ers.

2. Create Relevant, Authoritative Content

Write about what you do, why you do it, and how it helps your customers. It sounds almost too good to be true, but sharing your expertise is key! Think about the questions people might ask about your products or services, then answer them. Use natural, relevant keywords—the words people type in when looking for what you offer—but don’t overdo it. No need for keyword stuffing here; Google likes a natural flow.

Make sure you structure it well, too. Use headings, bold text, and italics to make it reader-friendly and to help Google understand your main points.

3. Add New Content Regularly

Yes, it’s a commitment, but it’s worth it! We’ve found that just two blog-style posts per month or a quick company update can work wonders. And don’t forget to share that content! Post it on social media, and reach out to others who might link back to your article. Consistency and quality content are your SEO best friends.

4. Technical SEO—Yeah, We’re Going There!

Here’s where the behind-the-scenes magic happens. A well-built website that loads quickly, is properly structured, and is easy for Google to crawl is crucial. After 25 years in business, we know the importance of a solid tech foundation. Think of this as setting up the stage for all your great content to shine! And don’t worry—our team (hi Glen, Kelsey, Barry, and Tomas!) can handle this part if you’d rather leave it to the pros.

In Summary…

Write about what you do, use relevant keywords, post consistently, share it widely, and make sure your website is well-built. Need a hand with any of this? That’s what we’re here for!
